Secrets of a Closet Sleuth by Jane O'Connor was the book discussed at our August meeting. After a July hiatus we gathered at Betheny's house where we met her very lively beagle and admired her new bedroom suite. There was discussion of Mary's nautical Seattle wedding (which Donna and I also attended). We are all waiting for Donna's pictures (hint, hint).
Ah, yes about the book. A fun summer read about an editor working at her son's prestigious upper East side private school. Rannie has been fired from her editing job because, in editing a Nancy Drew book, she overlooked the missing 'L' in The Secret of the Old Clock. Anyway, a sweet old man who helps the students get into prestigious universities where he has longtime connections is killed. There are many suspects, but Rannie is finally able to find the reel culprit.
None of the group had been able to guess who the murderer was. And we all enjoyed the New York background and the interesting characters, especially Rannie's East Side mother-in-law and her girlfriend. Descriptions of the food served by Mom's cook were priceless. What is the surprise in Jello Surprise?
We were a bit surprised by the detailed sex scenes between Rannie and her new lover, a bar owner and ex-cop. They sort of departed from the spirit of the book, but maybe Ms. O'Connor is planning to write an erotic book next a la Anne Rice.
Perhaps not the deepest book we've read, but lot's of fun and a nice change.
