August Meeting

On August 15 we had our 10th aniversary celebration. Five of us met for dinner at the Madras Pavilion, where we feasted on South Indian food. Then we all congregated at Donna's for fabulous cake and champagne punch. Donna had haunted the dollar stores in town to find gifts themed to books we had read. They included a dress up set with white gloves and a "diamond" ring (The Best of Everything), a bobble head cat (Kafka on the Shore), and a bride and groom figurine (The Amateur Marriage).

We managed to squeeze in a lively discussion of the Life of Pi. The group divided between those who didn't like (or even hated) the book, and those who loved it (Marilyn thought it was the best book she'd read this year). And there was me--I only made it to page 60.

Those who loved the book admired the excellent writing and the metaphors galore.

Those with less favorable opinions had problems with the story's lack of realism, characters and especially the lurid descriptions of the killing of animals. They also found the extremely detailed description annoying.

Whether we liked or hated "Pi", it gave us ammunition for a lively discussion.
